Don’t Be Afraid to Ride a Bicycle to Lose Weight   by Chris Morris

Bicycling is one of the best activities for losing weight. Not only is it fun, it also helps burn calories as well strengthen your muscles. It is a low impact sport for most recreational riders and can be done both on and off-road. However, even as adults, people can still be intimidated to ride a bike which is a shame because if you want to get in a workout and get in shape then few activities can actually beat it.

One of the biggest issues that people have with cycling, particularly if they have not been riders long, is they do not feel safe riding among the automobile traffic. Unfortunately there are many communities that do not have safe bikeways for riding with traffic. Some cities and towns have nice bike trails to ride on though which make for a nice exercise location. However, you will have to decide if you are motivated enough to load your bike on your car to ride on the trail if you do not live close to it. After a couple of times of having to put your bike on the rack to go exercise may in fact de-motivate you form this exercise. This also includes people who want to ride on the trails with their mountain bikes. Some may not live close to the trails and have to travel a ways to ride.

This leaves you with the option of simply leaving out of your driveway and going for a ride. You simply have to develop confidence to ride with traffic. First of all, wearing a helmet is not optional. You have to wear one when you ride your bike. Most serious injuries or deaths from people crashing on a bike, car or not, is because they were not wearing a helmet. Get a good and comfortable one and wear it.

As far as riding with traffic, try to ride when the traffic is light, particularly when you are first starting out. Going for a ride early in the morning on the weekends is typically a good time to ride. The commuting traffic is much lighter than during the work week. During the week you may have to wait until later in the evening when there is less traffic getting home from work.

Hopefully you can find a route that does not include heavily trafficked roads. Going through neighborhoods is one way to tie together a satisfying ride. If you are trying to lose weight you simply need to get on you bike and turn the pedals. Subdivisions and neighborhoods can be set off the main road arteries and provide a great course to train on.

Finally, if you cannot ride during the week due to traffic you can always use an indoor bike trainer to get your workout in. You can buy one to mount your bike on or you can join an indoor cycling class at your local gym or health facility. Whatever it takes, do not be afraid to use cycling as a means to lose weight. It is really one of the best and most fun activities to help you get in shape.
